INSTITUTE

OUR STORY
I always wanted to tackle the question from various angles--academic articles, visual arts, spatial designs, music, story telling, etc. etc. NERIKO Institute is an attempt to bring together people from diverse fields to work on specific issues sharing our own expertise.

Unit-Thinking
is the viewpoint where we see the world as made-up of separate, bounded, countable units.
We seek to challenge and overcome unit-thinking because it:
-
creates inaccurate understanding of the world
-
separates people (as nation, race, etc.) in ways that can hinder connections
-
portrays things/people in the category as homogeneous, which results in imposing the dominant ways/views as the norm and erasing/ignoring other ways/views

Project 1
Post Unit-Thinking
In this project, we explore ways to overcome currently prevalent "unit-thinking" in the world.

Examples of unit-thinking include seeing:
-
color as made up of discrete units
-
flow of time as the occurrence of consecutive units of minutes or hours
-
people as belonging to an internally homogeneous nation or race
-
diverse linguistic practices as belonging to static units of "language" or "dialects"

project 2
DISTANCING
We revisit the politics of difference and divisions by including a new concept, DISTANCING.
We explore technologies, processes and effects of distancing and suggest ways to live with distances.
Distancing is a relational concept that focuses on the existence of multiple parties
Distancing is a matter of degree and spectrum
Distancing is an ongoing process
It is post unit-thinking

- BE PROACTIVE -
- BE EFFECTIVE -
Project 3
New Civic Engagement
This project aims at incorporating various theories on civic engagement in practices. Civic engagement practices can deflect attention from structural causes of social issues. As a result, it can result in reinforcing status quo, including structures of power. This project seeks to design and implement civic engagement projects that address social issues at various levels and scales.
